Mosquito Born Viruses

Gutter Covers:  Keep Mosquitoes at Bay!

It’s that time of year!  Warm summer days lead into warm summer nights.  You long to be outdoors celebrating the season.  But, you are worried about all the news regarding diseases spread by mosquitoes and other yard pests.  Two of the top viruses making headlines today are West Nile Virus and Zika Virus.  Both of these viruses are contracted initially through bites from mosquitoes.  Different mosquitoes carry different viruses.  For example, West Nile Virus can be carried by the Culex species; Zika is carried by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species.

The best protection against these viruses is to ensure you do not have a breeding ground for mosquitoes around your house.  It is VERY important to remove any standing water or areas with excessive moisture by targeting these problem areas:

     1)   Birdbaths, pet bowls, fountains and ponds
     2)   Clogged gutters and downspouts
     3)   Standing water in low-lying areas of your yard
     4)   Compost piles and garden debris

Clogged gutters provide a nesting ground for mosquitoes and other pests and may be more difficult to maintain and keep clean than other problem areas for mosquitoes.  If you have clogged gutters or downspouts, you may not even know it because you don’t want to climb a ladder to check.

Installing gutter covers on your gutters will keep them free flowing and free of clogs.  If there is nothing in your gutters, it is very unlikely that they will become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  And don’t forget to check your downspouts as well.

An ounce of prevention is worth a lot!  Keep your family safe this summer by installing gutter protection on your home.  No more worries about those pesky pests!
