Spring Clean-up Time for Your Gutters

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

April showers may bring May flowers, but they also can bring you some expensive spring home improvement projects if your roof and gutters aren’t ready for spring. Spring is a great time to inspect your gutters to make sure they are free flowing to avoid any maintenance problems when Mother Nature brings the inevitable spring storms.
Gutter clogs and inferior gutter guards can cause major problems.
And it’s also a great time to invest in a gutter protection product that can end one of the messiest and dangerous jobs around the house: climbing up ladders to clean your gutters.

Clogged gutters can be more than just a nuisance. Over time, the weight of leaves, water and other debris can cause your gutters to sag and pull away from your home. Investing in aquality gutter guard product now from a professional installer can prevent greater damage to your home caused by leaking gutters or rotting eaves.

As part of installing a gutter protection solution to your gutter clog problems, a gutter professional also can do a full inspection to make sure your gutter support brackets and hangers are not deformed, broken or disconnected at any of the joints.

Some DIY Gutter Products Cause New Problems
Every year we continue to be amazed by the shoddy DIY products that consumers waste their money on to end gutter clog problems. And many of the products can actually cause bigger headaches down the road.
We have seen homeowners install gutter guards that sink into the gutters because they are not sturdy enough to stand up to debris that always seems to collect in their gutters. And the gutter foam products quickly become saturated and clogged with debris, and the weight build up can actually cause your gutters to pull away from the fascia board.
Clogged micro mesh filters can cause waterfalls and foundation damage,
The flavor of the month in gutter protection now seems to be micro mesh filters. These filters sit on top of your gutters and water is supposed to keep flowing through the micro holes in the product while all debris is kept out. But like all filters, micro-mesh needs to be cleaned regularly to perform properly. And no matter how "micro" the holes are, if the product is covered by debris, water can’t flow into the holes.

So where does the water go? It goes over the gutter. So you now have replaced a gutter clog with a waterfall that can drown your landscaping, and even worse, create a strain on your home’s foundation that leads to basement leaks, and even worse problems.

There simply is no one-size-fits-all solution to gutterclogs. You need an expert to analyze your specific problems and then recommend the right product to address those problems.

Before you make that dangerous spring climb up your ladder and install the latest fad product, ask yourself if you’re really ending your gutter clog problems or just setting yourself up for a more expensive repair down the road. Make the right call – and investment – and contact a gutter protection specialist who can recommend the right product for your specific problem.

As a general contractor and craftsman, Tony Iannelli saw the damage caused by clogged gutters, and he knew he could invent a solution in his workshop. That invention was Gutter Topper, which then led to his company, Gutter Covers International, developing a series of gutter protection products. Since then, millions of feet of Tony's gutter protection products have been installed in over 200 markets across the USA, Canada and Europe.
