Gutter Topper Imitators Can’t Pass the Test

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

When you sneeze, do you reach for a Kleenex? And when you need to make a copy, do you Xerox it? Companies often hate it when their trademarks are used to describe other products, but at Gutter Covers International, we’re flattered when customers say they need “gutter toppers” to prevent gutter clogs – because we manufacturer and sell the one, the only, the original Gutter Topper.

It’s the ultimate compliment when the general public begins to use our trademarked Gutter Topper brand name to define the entire gutter guard category. But when it comes to gutter protection, there is a huge difference between Gutter Topper and the pretenders in the marketplace.

Sure, others describe themselves as” gutter toppers.” But the original Gutter Topper is the only gutter guard that has been independently tested and certified to keep your gutters free flowing and free of debris. Gutter Topper has been independently tested to:
Gutter Topper gutter guards are uniquely designed with eleven critical bends of strength to handle anything Mother Nature can throw at it. Gutter Topper, with its patented design, is the most effective, efficient system available – and that’s something our imitators can’t claim.

As a general contractor, I saw the serious damage to homes caused by clogged gutters, including flooded basements and foundation damage.  I knew these problems could be prevented if I could create a “topper” for gutters that would prevent leaves and debris from collecting. The result was the introduction of Gutter Topper – and now millions of feet of our product have been installed on homes in the USA, Canada and Europe.

Unlike our imitators, Gutter Topper also is proudly made in the USA at our manufacturing facility just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. On our plant floor, you’ll find sophisticated digitally controlled manufacturing equipment others don’t have. Each machine was uniquely built to flawlessly produce Gutter Topper’s patented design. At a time when manufacturing jobs are leaving the USA, we’re proud to buck the trend.

So when you want a gutter protection product you can depend on, a gutter guard that will work as advertised, and a gutter cover system that protects your home and keeps your gutters debris free, you want "the original" Gutter Topper. That’s why we proudly tell our customers:  “Accept no substitute!”

As a general contractor and craftsman, Tony Iannelli saw the damage caused by clogged gutters, and he knew he could invent a solution in his workshop. That invention was Gutter Topper, which then led to his company, Gutter Covers International, developing a series of gutter protection products. Summer Storm Gutter Waterfalls Cause Home Damage

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

Did you know that just an inch of a summer rainfall pours close to 1500 gallons of water onto your roof? That’s why the performance of your gutters is so important to protecting your home. Waterfalls flowing over your gutters during a summer rainfall are a strong indication that you have clogged gutters – and clogged gutters can lead to some expensive home repairs.

Investing in gutter protection from Gutter Covers International is one of the wisest home improvements you can make, especially when you consider the damage caused by overflowing gutters. Home improvement companies constantly report problems from overflowing gutters that range from smaller problems such as landscaping damage to major foundation problems and flooded basements as the water pressure from storm runoff wreaks havoc on homes.
Waterfalls over gutters can lead to extensive home damage -- another reason to invest in gutter guards.
Your home’s gutters and downspouts are designed to move water down from the roof and away from your home and foundation for proper drainage. Water that can’t flow through your gutters finds the easiest path – and that often means the water comes right into your ceiling and walls.

One of the most common calls our independent home improvement contractors receive from homeowners usually involves water flowing over the front and ends of their gutters and flooding their home. And our contractors usually find gutters clogged solid with leaves or other debris.

When gutter debris gets wet, it absorbs the water from summer rainfalls like a large sponge – and you know how heavy a saturated sponge can get. This extra weight stresses your gutters and hanging brackets, and can result in your gutters pulling off of your house.
Just one inch of a summer rainfall equals 1500 gallons of water pouring onto the average roof.
Overflowing water from your gutters can also damage the paint and siding on your home, but even that is a small problem when you think of what happens if the water gets inside of a wall. Wet wood behind siding can rot, and you often don’t know how much damage has been caused until it’s too late.

Gutter Covers International has introduced a variety of gutter protection products that can safeguard your home from the problems caused by clogged and overflowing gutters.

Everything started with the one, the only, the “Original” Gutter Topper, independently tested and certified to withstand anything Mother Nature can throw at it. And now, our line-up of quality products includes:
  • The Leaf Terminator – a heavy duty gutter guard that allows water to flow through the patented perforation design, while at the same time, strengthens your gutter system. Itʼs also perfect for commercial buildings.
  • The Solution – our budget priced gutter guard that has been independently certified to outperform the competition.
  • Needle Beetle – specifically designed for areas where pine needles present unique gutter clog challenges.
  • Hott Topper -- helps to eliminate the problems caused by icicles and heavy snow
With so many gutter guard solutions available to you, you don’t have to learn your gutters are completely clogged when that summer storm comes and you wake up to find a basement full of water. Contact your independent Gutter Topper retailer and learn how our gutter guards can be one of the wisest summer home improvements you make.

Why You Should Think About Ice in Your Gutters in the Summer

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

With summer here, the only ice you’re probably thinking about is the ice you need to cool your drink on a hot day. But summer actually is the best time to plan ahead for protecting your roof and gutters from the winter weather that will eventually return.

If you’re like me, you’d like to forget about the recent rough winter. Once spring finally returned, many homeowners learned that they suffered significant damage to their home or landscaping. But have you checked your roof and gutters, too, for any damage? I know you’d rather enjoy the fine weather, but taking some preventive steps now can be a wise home investment when the seasons once again turn to winter.
Gutter Covers International introduced a new product called Hott Topper before the last winter to address the problems caused by ice dams and icicles hanging from your gutters, including resulting damage to their basements. Hott Topper proved to be very popular, but many homeowners decided to procrastinate and wait until they actually had snow on the roof before calling their local Gutter Topper Retailer about installing the product. And that’s a rough time for any Retailer to do work on the roof.

This is actually the best time of year to do some preventive maintenance that can protect your gutters, home, basement and landscaping – long before you’re facing winter’s wrath again. Doesn’t it make more sense to have your roof and gutters worked on when the weather is cooperating?

Icicles hanging from gutters can be dangerous – to your gutters, your foundation and your own health. Hott Topper melts the ice and snow on top of your Gutter Topper. And Hott Topper then allows the water to then enter your gutter to protect you from the danger of ice.

As icicles form, the weight can pull gutters from the fascia, leaving you with some big repair bills – and winter is a very tough time of year to make outside home repairs. Then as the icicles thaw and the water drips onto sidewalks below, the water can pool around your foundation, or refreeze and create icy patches.  And every winter, there are numerous injuries caused by slips and falls on icy patches. When you consider the cost of treating injuries, I knew we had to introduce a way to keep homeowners safe, and that’s why Hott Topper was introduced.
The self-regulating wire of Hott Topper doesn’t need a thermostat to control the heating temperature. Only when the weather gets cold, does your Hott Topper get hot – which is why now is a great time to install Hott Topper at your home. Hott Topper generates heat that melts the snow and ice before it turns into icicles and then lets the melted water go where it is supposed to --  into your gutters and downspouts.

So while you’re enjoying the great summer weather, why not plan ahead to eliminate one winter maintenance headache that you don’t need. Contact your independent Gutter Topper retailer and learn how Hott Topper can be one of the wisest summer home improvements you make.

Gutter Guard Choices, No One Size Fits All Solutions

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

Imagine shopping for a car and finding out there is only one choice – take it or leave it. Or shopping for a shirt and finding out there is only one style, one color and one size. Unfortunately, when it comes to gutter protection, many companies follow the same strategy – they have a single “one-size-fits-all solution” for you regardless of what your specific gutter clog problem is.

Of course, you already know that clogged gutters can cause serious damage to your home. Gutter guards are supposed to keep gutters clear, unclogged and free flowing – but not all gutter guards work as promised. Clogged gutters can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home from rotting fascia boards, landscape erosion, basement flooding, and foundation repairs. A quality gutter protection system from Gutter Covers International can end these costly problems and add value to your home, making your home more desirable when it comes time to sell.
Cleaning your gutters can be a messy -- and dangerous -- job. Gutter guards keep you safe and off the ladder.
But shopping for gutter protection is not something you do every day. I understand that making the right choice can be confusing. The one thing you need to know is that there is no one product that works in every situation, regardless of what you may hear from companies trying to sell you their one-size-fits-all solution. The truth is that there are no magic bullets or miracle cures that work best in every case.

Different gutter clog problems require different solutions. That’s why Gutter Covers International made the decision to manufacture a variety of products for a variety of needs and budgets. And weʼre continually developing additional products to protect your home, so that the independent companies that represent our products can recommend the very best product designed specifically to address the main cause of your clogged gutters.
Click to download our guide to get an unbiased view of all gutter protection choices
When you contact in independent home improvement company that sells products from Gutter Covers International, you can be sure you will receive the right solution from our line of products designed to address different needs:

  • Everything started with the one, the only, the “Original” Gutter Topper; independently tested and certified to withstand anything Mother Nature can throw at it.
  • Hott Topper -- helps to eliminate the problems caused by icicles and heavy snow.

Every product we design is independently tested to perform as promised. Why is that important? The term “Independently” tested means the company that was hired to test the product is independent from the manufacturer and will not be swayed to skew the results in any way. The product “is what it is” and the testing facility is completely unbiased and simply reports the results of the testing.

Our products are independently tested to determine how much rain each one can handle, how much debris each product allows to enter the gutter, how much weight the product will withstand and recover from, and most importantly, to determine if strong winds cause the product to separate from the gutter or worse yet, blow completely off.

Choosing a gutter guard system for your home can be one of the smartest investments you make, and your independent home improvement specialist is ready to offer you the right solution for your specific clogged gutters – no one size fits all solutions.

Top Reasons Every Homeowner Needs Gutter Guards

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

If there are 10 things that can go wrong with your home, nine will be caused by water. Water is the enemy of your home, but many homeowners still wonder if an investment in a gutter protection system is worth it. In fact, purchasing a gutter guard system for your home can be one of the best home improvements investments you ever make.

Just one inch of rain from a single rainfall can produce up to 2,500 gallons of water falling on an average 2,000 square foot roof. When working properly, your home’s gutter and downspout system is designed to capture that water and direct it away from your home. But what happens when your gutters and downspouts clog with debris? The first, most visible result is that you see waterfalls flowing over your gutters, because the water has nowhere to go – and that’s where the problems really start.
Clogged gutters lead to waterfalls ad home damage.
Landscaping Damage Caused by Gutter Waterfalls

Your landscaping usually takes the first blow from overflowing gutters. Shrubs, flowers, grass and mulch that you invest in to give your home great curb appeal become a mess, and soil can begin to erode around your home’s foundation.

Water Pressure Stresses Your Foundation

As the weight of the water starts to push against your foundation, the most expensive problems begin. Over time, water will find its way down and through the foundation walls as pressure builds. That leads to cracks in basement walls and eventually flooding in the basement. Even without cracks, the pressure of water can soak through the basement wall and result in a buckled foundation and costly repairs. Your foundation supports your entire home.  Too much water can eventually cause your foundation to shift, crack, or even sink.
Water damage caused by overflowing gutters.
Water flowing over your gutters also exposes doors, walls, and window frames to much larger amounts of water than they are designed to handle, since they count on your gutter and downspout system to divert rain away from your home. That leads to wood rot and warp, and, before you know it, you have a very expensive home improvement project on your hands.

Gutter Guards Keep Your Gutters and Downspouts Working Properly

When they are installed properly by a professional, gutter guards keep your gutter and downspout system working properly – and that keeps basements dry, preserves landscaping, and protects siding, windows and doors from water damage.

Your gutters and downspouts aren’t designed to handle leaves and other build-ups of debris. That’s why choosing a proven gutter guard system from an experienced installer can be one of the smartest home improvement investments you ever make. Please contact your local Gutter Topper Retailer for the right answer to your specific gutter protection needs.

Keep Foam in Your Cushions, Not in Your Gutters

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

If you’ve visited a home improvement box store recently, you may have seen prominent displays for foam gutter filters that claim to be an inexpensive solution to your gutter clog problems – but this is a great example of “let the buyer beware.” We have even seen some roofing companies selling versions of this foam product to unsuspecting homeowners, and our independent gutter guard installers report that they are constantly replacing these cheaply made products.

Of all the gimmick gutter clog solutions now available, the foam inserts seem to be quickly growing nationwide. The idea seems simple. A foam insert – usually a wedge shape -- is fitted into your gutter and water is supposed to flow through the porous foam, blocking debris from filling your gutters.
Somewhere under this messy gutter clog, there is a foam gutter filter.
But the problems with this “solution” are endless:
  • Debris ends up collecting on top of the foam and has nowhere to go, eventually clogging the top of the foam filter.
  • The clogged filters then result in waterfalls flowing over your gutters, which leads to foundation and landscaping damage.
  • Moss also builds up on top of the filters, just as it often does in an aquarium filter.
  • Oil and tar grit from your shingles will stick to them. Since the gutter filter foam is made of an oil-based product, oily residue from your roof will become part of the filters over time and clog the supposedly porous cells.
  • Small buds and twigs get lodged in the filters when the foam is wet.
  • Porous foam can’t handle the volume of water that often comes with strong storms.
  • What do you think happens to leaves that fall when it’s raining and then dry when the sun comes out? They stick to the foam, of course, like a layer of plaster.
  • In the winter, saturated foam can turn into ice which freezes in your gutters and prevents proper water flow.
  • Finally, just like any filter, foam filters need to be cleaned often. And if you happen to have pine trees in your yard, cleaning the needles out of the filter may be impossible.
Just like so many of the latest fads, foam filters look like a great idea – until you install them and quickly find the fatal flaws with the product design and performance. Foam filters simply don’t last, and why would you invest in a product that you have to keep cleaning or replacing?

The purpose of any gutter guard investment should be to keep you off the roof and end the need for the messy and often dangerous job of cleaning your gutters – and investing in foam filters simply won’t accomplish that.

Even the highest grade foam filter is only likely to last a season or two. And then you’ve got a mess to clean or a total replacement facing you.

When you factor in the cost of replacing worthless foam inserts year after year, suddenly the investment in gutter guards that work makes strong financial sense. Please contact your local Gutter Topper Retailer for the right answer to your specific gutter protection needs.

Foam may be great for a chair cushion, a pillow, a mattress or for packaging – but not for gutter guards!

Mico Mesh Gutter Filters Can Lead to Corrosion

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

If you are looking for a solution to gutter clogs for your home, you probably start online with a Google search – and then end up scratching your head with all the choices available to you. The leader in online “hype” now appears to be micro mesh gutter filters, but there’s a critical problem with these filters that many consumers don’t know about – the products have a design and manufacturing flaw that leads to rust and corrosion.

The micro-mesh filter is designed to sit on top of your gutter and seal your gutter while water is supposed to keep flowing through the micro holes in the product, and nothing else enters your gutters. One company even advertises that not even a grain of sand will enter your gutters.

What these companies don’t tell you is what happens to these micro-mesh filters over time. The filters often are manufactured with a combination of stainless steel and aluminum. So what’s wrong with that? When you add water from a rainfall, you now have the perfect prescription for a “galvanic reaction” between the metals – or, in simple terms, corrosion and rust.
Corrosion caused by aluminum reacting with stainless steel.
We have seen the micro-mesh filters eaten away by rust and destroyed over time by this common chemical reaction. The filters then separate or collapse into your gutters, and your only choice then is to replace them with a gutter guard that will work.

Sure, you can find videos online from manufacturers showing micro-mesh filters performing well. But it’s tougher to find videos showing what happens to these products over time – and time is the true enemy of micro-mesh filters because rust never sleeps.

Since micro-mesh products are filters, they also have to be cleaned, just like any other filter. Imagine using the same coffee filter again and again. The coffee sediment builds up on the bottom and eventually water does not flow through the filter. The same thing eventually happens to filters in your gutters.
Clogged micro-mesh filters can result in waterfalls that damage your landscaping and foundation.
Our independent gutter experts have seen micro-mesh filters coated with slippery moss and other debris so thick that even scrubbing could barely help. And with the filters so clogged, homeowners then had waterfalls running over their gutters because the water could not flow through the clogged holes.

So what can you do? I recommend that you talk to a gutter protection expert to analyze your specific gutter clog problems and then recommend the right product to address those problems. For example, the same product may not perform well for a problem with pine tree needles as it does for deciduous trees and debris clogs. And that’s why Gutter Covers International has a product for each one of those needs.

Before you invest your hard-earned dollars in the latest hyped product, just ask yourself a simple question: Are you really saving money and ending your gutter clog problems if you have to continually get up on the roof and clean the filters or watch them eventually rust away? Please contact your local Gutter Topper Retailer for the right answer to your specific gutter protection needs.

April Showers Bring May Gutter Clogs

By Tony Iannelli
Inventor of Gutter Topper and founder and owner, Gutter Covers International

Have the spring waterfalls started flowing yet from your gutters? Many homeowners don’t realize they have a problem with clogged gutters until the first hard spring rains come. Then they find water pooling in their landscaping – and worse yet – they learn that water has damaged their foundation. But this is all preventable.

Like most homeowners, I’m sure you have seen many ads, discount coupon mailers and coupon magazines offering the “next best thing” in gutter guards. You can look at your gutters and know you have a problem, but what is the best solution for your specific gutter clog problems?

The free Complete Guide to Gutter Protection offers an overview of gutter protection choices. Click to download it.
There really is no “one size fits all” solution, which is why we work hard to help customers make educated choices. That’s why we offer a free “Complete Guide to Gutter Protection” that reviews all of the gutter protection choices available to you. Our goal is try to take the hype out of gutter protection and help you make the proper choice for your investment.

Unfortunately, spring is also the time when many disreputable companies come out of the woodwork and prey on homeowners, especially older people who can’t do work around the house that they once could. These companies sweep through neighborhoods, sell unsuspecting homeowners on a gutter guard solution, and then they are gone with the wind when their gutter guard product fails.

But you can protect yourself by reading the Complete Guide to Gutter Protection and then learning a few key things about the contractor:

  • Reputation and knowledge -- In most cases, you don’t stay in business very long if you sell inferior products or have shoddy workmanship. You can also easily gain a lot of valuable information by contacting your area Better Business Bureau.
  • Training -- A quality product is only as good as its installation. Ask whether installers have been trained to properly install the products they are selling. Even the best products can fail if they are not installed properly. And ask if the contractor will be using sub-contractors, which can lead to problems.
  • Has the gutter guard product been independently tested? – Anybody can say they have a great product. But you’ll find that products that have been independently tested will stand up to years of weather, and that’s where you want to make your investment.

Choosing the right gutter protection system can be one of the smartest home investments you make. Besides keeping you safe and off the roof, you’ll also be investing in an even more precious commodity – your time.

And wouldn’t you rather be enjoying the great weather with your family instead of doing a dangerous and messy gutter cleanup job?
